From a basketball perspective, John played for both Dandenong Rangers and Frankston Bears and is a former Basketball Australia Board member, WNBL Chairperson and WNBL life member. He volunteered for the Sydney Kings for 30 years and at one stage, was a part owner. John also volunteered and managed the planning for recent Women’s World Cup in Sydney.
 
In business, John has a degree Civil Engineering degree and several post-graduate qualifications, including European and US project management qualifications. He has been a senior manager and Director for several large IT companies, including leading IBM’s Sports and Entertainment business in Asia Pacific and having been the Project Executive for IBM at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Later he transferred to the Learning Business, attained a Masters in Adult Learning and led Learning businesses in Asia Pacific and Europe for IBM, Sun Microsystems and Informatica.
